What now?

Why does this blog exist?

I'm sick of the anti-progress crowd wrapping themselves in a blanket of tradition and so-called tax-payer responsibility.

I'm sick of a mayor with no vision or plan for the future of this city.

Halifax has a choice: remain wrapped in quaintness, or become a dynamic city of the 21st century.

Do we want our city to become a "what it was" or "a what it could be"?

Some of the most creative and forward thinking people in the world live here.

But not for long, not if we don't change.

Another poll...

Oh no!

Another poll!

Seventy-two per cent of metro residents support Halifaxs Commonwealth Games bid, according to a new poll  despite mounting speculation that the costs will be out of reach.

According to a Corporate Research Associates poll released Wednesday, 33 per cent completely and 39 per cent mostly support the Commonwealth bid.

The numbers are slightly lower than a Nova Scotia poll done by the same company in November and December, which had 79 per cent of Nova Scotians surveyed supporting the bid.

CRA surveyed 400 metro adults between Feb. 1 and 7 as part of its Halifax urban report. The poll is considered accurate to within 4.9 percentage points, 95 times out of 100.

So will begin the Legion of Doom's picking apart of an independent poll.

"They must have asked leading questions."

Well the question was....

"As you may know, Halifax is the Canadian entry in the bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. All things considered, do you completely support, mostly support, mostly oppose, or completely oppose Halifax hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2014?"

Yeah, that's a rigged question for yah!

When that doesn't work, they call the reputation of Don Mills into question.

"He's lying!", He has something to gain!"

I love how quick the nay-sayers are to call people liars, to call people's motives into question.

Well, someone should look into the motives of some of the anti-games supporters.

I mean Bruce Devenne has declared he's running.

I think the most revealing statistic is that only 53% of residents 55 years or old support the games.

Yup, talk about your elder greed. The same bunch who bitch and moan about schools, road hockey, and skateboards, are the same ones claiming to protect the future.

They've paid their dues! Why the hell should any of their money go into a legacy for any one else?

Be careful, Legion of Doom!

Regardless of what the Scarecrow says, we're not afraid of the future.

Boo!

Hmmm. CRA Corporate Research Associates which is owned by Don Mills the co-chair of the newly formed Commonwealth Games support group, Bring On The Games.
This poll doesn't even qualify. For one thing again four hundred surveys is not definitive by anyone's standards, at least not anyone credible. Mr. Mills has compromised his expertise on the subject of market research with this dog of a survey. Next how many demographics make up the four hundred respondents. Where were the calls made? What was the age and sex demographic of the respondents? What was the median income level of respondents? Without this information you might as well ask four hundred ducks if they quack.
Once again though the magic four hundred number is more indicative of the solid support the yea-sayers have for the games. Four hundred respondents out of a population of 385,000 or to break that number down to homeowners, four hundred out of 70,000, let's see that works out to be six tenths of one percent of home/property owners. Yeah that's a definitive measurement. They could have had 401 respondents only Scott Logan is in the Caribbean this week as part of his fact finding duties.
Truth is that more citizens are beginning to ask pertinent questions that require honest and accurate replies. Educators are wondering if there'll be any money for education should the HRM be saddled with a billion dollar debt (don't forget that the city already is on the hook for more than a half billion in existing debt from amalgamation and the Harbour Solutions Project which apparently is already doesn't pass muster regarding new treatment plant standards and the plants aren't even totally built and to do so would require another $100 million in upgrades)
People are starting to ask questions and looking for answers. Come May 9th will the people of Nova Scotia be any closer to the truth?

The questions asked by pollsters do not have to be leading when they are asking a public who do not yet know all of the facts. So, the only facts represented by the bid committee are those that they are allowing us to see. Therefore the only conclusion that may be reached by this information is exactly the same as the spin that is put on it to begin with. Let's see what happens when the numbers are finally released and the Government has already wasted millions. Too bad hindsight is the only thing that is 20 x 20.
