What now?

Why does this blog exist?

I'm sick of the anti-progress crowd wrapping themselves in a blanket of tradition and so-called tax-payer responsibility.

I'm sick of a mayor with no vision or plan for the future of this city.

Halifax has a choice: remain wrapped in quaintness, or become a dynamic city of the 21st century.

Do we want our city to become a "what it was" or "a what it could be"?

Some of the most creative and forward thinking people in the world live here.

But not for long, not if we don't change.

I just got this important message from BD.

YOu are now blocked. (His caps, not mine)

YEAH!

I know that council, etc could only ever dream of getting that one!

Oh, and he's declared that he's running for council in Sackville!

Check out the next council elections in Sackville riding

Look out Bob Harvey and Brad Johns!

How can you two dedicated public servants win against him?

Maybe by continuing to serve the people of your community with skill and compassion.

Then again in Bruce Devenne's case, just let him talk a bit.

I'm not much of a supporter for either Mr. Harvey or Mr. Johns and I'm curious as to why they won't support local initiatives (curling club in SSS)but are willing to go out to "the end of the limb" over a games that they really have no idea how much it will cost or where the public money is supposed to come from.
Recently Mr.Harvey attempted to get the debts of several local sports/recreation facilities taken over the HRM so as to ease the burden faced by community members and/or users of these facilities. Steve Stretch, councillor for the Eastern Shore said that the proposed addition of 15 million in debt would take a "considerable" bite out of the municipality's budget. This comment has puzzled me or perhaps Mr. Stretch and other members of council are confused by the numbers. If HRM gets the games, 15 million is likely to be just the first year's interest on the debt that citizens of HRM will owe on their share of the Commonwealth Games debt.

Without becoming to "windy" over the issue, I guess the best example of public representative management of debt repayment would be the two Halifax bridges, the MacDonald and the MacKay. The MacDonald bridge is more than fifty years old and the MacKay is approaching thirty five and neither bridge is paid off. If I'm wrong and the bridges are paid off, then the public is being misled as to the financial needs of the bridges or as to where all the money goes that is collected every vehicle that uses the bridges (except for Christmas Day)
Naysayers, as they have been portrayed have asked some very simple questions but have received nothing in the line of honesty from the bid committee and it is doubtful that in May 2007 they will be any further enlightened as the bid committee from each of the three cities (Halifax, Glasgow and Abuja) can submit final "revised" numbers in Sept 07 two months prior to the selection in November.

This bid committee's "bid" in May will come in around 900 million but in Sept the "revised" number will be closer to $1.5 billion which if we "win" the bid we will learn sometime during the construction phase as costs continue to escalate. If Halifax doesn't win the bid, the public will never find out the real costs, which I will be able to live with because we won't be saddled with a debt that we will likely never pay off.
To the supporters of the bid, shut me up by proving me wrong with facts, not foolish and insulting rhetoric.

Carl Burns has probably upset the local squad that hand out here. His article is intelligent, well written and shows forethought and reality. Nine of the above applies to the drivel that usually appears here.
